Vail Daily letter: One huge difference

February 12th 2010

It strikes me that right now there is one huge difference between the Democratic and the Republican parties. Whether you agree with their policies or not, the Democrats are desperately trying to do what’s in the best interests of our country while the Republicans are trying to position themselves to win future elections. One party is putting America first and the other is putting their party first. And I think that the G.O.P. should be ashamed, and we the people ought to be appalled and reject them.
These are difficult times for our nation: Ending the wars and ending the deaths has to be balanced against the possibility of resurgent terrorist movements. Suggesting that the government must now create jobs comes close to being ridiculous when our free enterprise system basically gives that responsibility to business, industry, and commerce. Exercising more controls over banks and insurance companies are controversial issues, and responsible legislation is made much more difficult by the

Vail Daily letter: Quit complaining

February 12th 2010

Every time I pick up a copy of the Vail Daily, it amuses me how many people bitch and moan in this valley. The Letters to the Editor section is full of people complaining about this or that (walking to the lift/waiting in line at the post office. Are you serious?)
You should count your blessings to live in such a beautiful place which has a standard of living greater than 90 percent of the world. If it’s so terrible, please leave us to our miserable valley. Waaaaaaa!

Olympics to kick off with indoor opening ceremony

February 12th 2010

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Tonight’s opening ceremony at the Olympics will take place indoors this year, the first time a host nation has put a roof over the extravagant spectacle.

That’s probably just as well. For a few hours at least, maybe everyone can stop fretting about the weather.

The Vancouver Games begin today, and the conditions are almost as big a story as the athletes. A women’s downhill training session at Whistler was called off Thursday because of fog, but not before American Stacey Cook crashed after landing a jump. Over at Cypress Mountain, officials have been transporting snow by truck to help maintain the freestyle and snowboarding venues.

There will be no such concerns at the opening ceremony, however. That event, which will highlight NBC’s first-day coverage of the 2010 Games, will take place inside the 60,600-seat BC Place, a domed structure visible from all over Vancouver.

Instead of worrying about the constant rain that’s been falling on thi

Vail Daily column: A deadly turn from tradition

February 12th 2010

I can see how traditional indigenous healers might get cranky with New Agers borrowing from their heritage.
Especially when people get killed.
I just happened to attend parts of a weekend seminar on the medicine wheel - put on by Northern Cheyenne horseman and leader Phillip Whiteman - in Carbondale right after three people died in a Sedona, Ariz., sweat lodge last fall.
Whiteman’s take was that something he had spent a lifetime learning from his elders, in a tradition eons old, was usurped by a modern self-helper who didn’t really know what he was doing.
Possibly. Of course, soaking in lodges or rooms heated by stones crosses cultures and can have nothing spiritual about them.
But if you are going to throw in spirituality - New Ager or indigenous practitioner - you had better know what you are doing.
Mix in “wealth” with “spirituality” and I’m seeing the eye of the needle from the Okie preacher’s son, James Arthur Ray. He charge
